Jarro-Dophilus EPS ® is a Stable-Dophilus due to its stability at room temperature and enteric coating which protects the probiotic bacteria from stomach acid. How Does Each Active Ingredient Function in this Product?

Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011:  A unique, high producer of polysaccharides that facilitate colonization and stimulate intestinal immune response and bowel function.*

The intestines range from a relatively alkaline environment (pH) of the small intestine to an increasingly acidic environment in the large intestine. No one strain of bacteria can provide benefits throughout the entire length of the alimentary canal. This is the reason that Jarrow Formulas Jarro-Dophilus EPS supplies eight different strains.

In the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum), the primary lactic flora which can be supplemented are the lactobacilli, although enterococci are also present. The large intestine exhibits a large proportion of bifidobacteria in addition to its components of lactobacilli and enterococci. The typical intestinal and vaginal flora includes several different species of lactic acid bacteria which perform different activities according to the nature of their enzyme systems. In the case of carbohydrate processing, for example, Lactobacillus rhamnosus ferments at least 24 different carbohydrates: L. acidophilus, up to 16; and L.delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, 7 different carbohydrates. This means that the lactic bacteria are important for completing the processing of carbohydrates in the gut. Bifidobacteria, which are located mainly in the large intestine, can ferment a variety of undigested carbohydrates, such as lactulose and oligosaccharides, and produce lactic and acetic acids. This provides the body’s “friendly bacteria” its best protection against unfriendly bacteria and yeast.*

Probiotic bacteria are important aids to normal digestion and assimilation beyond the simple processing of carbohydrates.* Some species of lactic acid bacteria contribute to the digestion of proteins, some deconjugate bile salts, some produce specific beneficial bacteriocins, while others enhance the immune response.* The eight different species found in Jarro Dophilus EPS are representatives of four different genera: lactobacillus, bifidobacteria, lactococcus, and pediococcus.

Jarro-Dophilus EPS helps to safeguard and preserve the health of the entire intestinal tract with a mixture of the most important lactobacilli species which include Lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. casei, L. plantarum, and L. acidophilus.* Bifidobacterium longum BB536 (Morinaga strain) has been shown in well-controlled clinical trials to stimulate immune response and to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.* BB536 also has been shown to reduce the production of IgE, which is related to a healthy histamine response.* R0052 has been shown to support normal bowel functioning, as well as to enhance gastrointestinal health.* Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 is a species, which prolifically produces unique polysaccharides which augment intestinal immune response and also facilitate probiotic colonization.* Administration of strains R0052 and R0011 together resulted in more normal bowel responses in children.* Pediococcus helps to minimize putrification in the gut and produces novel pediocins (antibiotic-like bacteriocins).*

Requirements for Multi-Species Probiotic Success
There are several properties that are required from strains of lactic acid bacteria if these are to result in an efficient probiotic. No single strain can easily fulfill all these requirements. A mixture of species, therefore, is usually most suitable for supplementation. The most desirable properties of a good probiotic are:

At the time of manufacture, Jarro-Dophilus EPS supplies 5 billion live organisms per capsule. Even very hardy species of probiotics must be supplied in sufficient quantities if they are to properly colonize the gut and favorably influence bowel health. Newly advanced processing techniques now permit the production of very concentrated sources of probiotic bacteria, which have been carefully selected for their complimentary interaction with one another.

Enteric Coated to Protect Against Stomach Acid
The acidity of the stomach forms an important natural barrier against the entry of bacteria and yeasts into the rest of the digestive tract. However, this same barrier can impede probiotic supplementation. Jarro-Dophilus EPS enteric coated capsules bypass the acid barrier and thereby optimize the amount of friendly bacteria to the intestines, giving superior results with fewer capsules.

Suggested Usage
Take 1 to 2 capsules per day, preferably on an empty stomach, though it may be also taken with food, or as directed by your qualified health consultant.

Storage Instructions
Jarro-Dophilus EPS  is room temperature stable and does not require refrigeration. Refrigerating Jarro-Dophilus EPS is optional and will further extend the shelf-life by safeguarding the product from heat, especially during the hot summer months. Blister packaging each capsule provides extra protection to the probiotic bacteria against external moisture and oxygen.

Other Ingredients
Potato starch, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), and ascorbic acid. Contains: Soy (less than 0.1%) and milk (casein, less than 0.01%).
