What does EPA-DHA Balance® do?
EPA-DHA Balance® contains odorless pharmaceutical grade, ultra- purified and highly concentrated omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.
EPA-DHA Balance® offers synergistic benefits from both important omega-3 fatty acids in a 2:1 ratio.*
EPA-DHA Balance®
- Purified by molecular distillation. Meets stringent CRN and proposed USP monographs for purity and is purified to remove heavy metals such as mercury and other environmental toxins.
- Manufactured according to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.
- EPA and DHA support cardiovascular and brain function, enhance joint mobility and promote positive mood.*
How Does Each Active Ingredient Function in this Product?
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA): An essential fatty acid that modulates inflammation pathways in the body and promotes cardiovascular health*
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA): An essential fatty acid critical to the wellbeing of brain and eye health, especially for developing babies.*
EPA-DHA Balance®
EPA: An Essential Fat
EPA-DHA Balance® contains a high concentration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) derived from cold-water fish oil. This omega-3 fatty acid is essential for health, particularly cardiovascular health, and must be obtained from the diet. EPA is concentrated and purified by molecular distillation to ensure that it is free of toxic impurities. The omega-3 fatty acids in EPA-DHA Balance are in the form of mixed glycerides, which are better assimilated than free fatty acids or ethyl esters. EPA-DHA Balance has a 2:1 ratio of EPA to DHA.
EPA-DHA Balance can strongly impact immunity, inflammation and cardiovascular health.* With the excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids (predominant in corn, soybean and cooking oils) in the American diet, health professionals advise balancing with omega-3 fatty acids. EPActive is a potent source of omega-3s.
The Inflammation Connection
The potential of essential fatty acids has been documented in several studies. Their effects were first suggested by epidemiological studies in Greenland Eskimos, where high seafood intake is associated with reduced autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Increased fish oil intake over vegetable oil was found to promote the inflammation health of various tissue and organs.* Omega-3 supplements also helped decrease painkiller use in rheumatoid arthritis patients, presumably because increased inflammation health led to less pain. A recent animal study found that a low-calorie diet, rich in fish oil reduced the markers of inflammation by as much as 90 per cent in this mouse model.*
Cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes mediate the production of proinflammatory prostaglandins, which lead to pain and inflammation. These prostaglandins are manufactured primarily from arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. Unfortunately, synthetic drugs (e.g., NSAIDs) that inhibit COX can cause a variety of problems, like damage to the gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys. These problems arise because COX is actually two enzymes rather than one. COX-1 is highly desirable even under conditions of active inflammation. It produces prostaglandins that protect the stomach and kidneys against damage by acid and other forms of assault. In contrast, COX-2 activates inflammation-inducing prostaglandins. Sometimes synthetic drugs block both pathways, therefore protecting and damaging the body simultaneously. COX-1 inhibitors can cause serious gastrointestinal side effects.
COX-2 plays a critical role in immune function; salt, water and body temperature regulation; nerve transmission and in the proper operation of several organ systems, including the brain and kidneys. Moreover, inflammation is an important signal of damage to local tissues. There are other arachidonic acid-activating, pro-inflammatory pathways in the body besides COX-2 (e.g., 5-lipoxygenase and 12-lipoxygenase). Thus, even the newer drugs that block only COX-2 do not cover all the pathways that trigger inflammation, and often interfere with vital processes. It is much safer and more beneficial to support natural mechanisms for controlling COX-2, with the added benefit of moderating other pathways of inflammation (e.g., leukotrienes). And inflammation health is closely linked with cardiovascular health.*
Our modern diet has led to an increased need for omega-3 supplementation. Excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids from processed foods and vegetable oils can elevate arachidonic acid, as a result of elevated delta-5-desaturase activity. Excessive arachidonic acid, in turn, promotes inflammation. EPA counter-balances this action, in part by tying up the delta-5-desaturase enzyme to make antiinflammatory substances. Supplementation with EPA is particularly important for those who have diets high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The addition of EPA to GLA-supplemented diets helps prevent serum arachidonic acid accumulation in humans.*
Jarrow Formulas’ EPA-DHA Balance contains both of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Although these are closely related fatty acids, EPA and DHA have somewhat different roles within the body. DHA is known largely for its high content in the brain and retina and its effects on brain function.* EPA works by suppressing the arachidonic acid cascade and by increasing the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (i.e., PGE-3). Supplementing with EPA may support healthy inflammation response thus supporting health, in general, and promoting cardiovascular health, in particular.* EPA is also reported to enhance mood in human studies.* EPA-DHA Balance has a 2:1 ratio of EPA to DHA.
