What does Bifidus Balance® + FOS do?
PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
-
Bifidobacteria Synbiotic Capsules
- Contains FOS Prebiotic Fiber
- 2 Billion Probiotic Organisms Per Capsule
- 4 Strains, Including BB536
- Bifidobacteria Colonize Shortly After Birth
Bifidus Balance ® + FOS contains 4 species of bifidobacteria typically found in humans. Each Bifidus Balance capsule contains 2 billion organisms at time of manufacture, and survives stomach acid to reach the intestines. Bifidus Balance contains the natural prebiotic fiber FOS which promotes the growth of beneficial probiotic bacteria.*
Bifidus Balance +?FOS survives stomach acid and colonizes the intestines.* FOS is a natural fiber that enhances the growth of beneficial probiotic bacteria.* Each capsule contains 5 billion total probiotic bacteria.
Who Can Benefit From this Product?
Children and seniors require primarily bifidobacteria supplementation. Teens and adults tend to require more lactobacilli as found in Jarro-Dophilus EPS®. However, both bifidobacteria and lactobacilli can provide benefits for people of all ages.*
What Distinguishes this Product?
- Bifidobacteria Synbiotic Formula With FOS
- 2 Billion Beneficial Organisms per Capsule
- 4 Bifidobacteria Species Including B. longum BB536
- Only Bifidobacteria Strains, No Lactobacilli
How Do the Active Ingredients Function in this Product?
B. breve: Promotes bowel comfort*
B. infantis: Supports regularity and gastrointestinal health*
B. bifidum: Assists in the balance of intestinal flora and supports immunity*
B. longum: May modulate immune response to allergens*
Inulin-FOS: Soluble fiber extracted from chicory that provides nutritional support to beneficial bacteria and may promote regularity.*
Bifidus Balance® + FOS
Bifidobacteria normally colonize the human colon and, like Lactobacillus species, also often produce lactic acid. These probiotics compete with undesirable bacteria for living space and nutrients. Moreover, the metabolites of bifidobacteria (acetic acid, lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocins) suppress other microorganisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In fact, some species of Bifidobacteria (including B. lactis, B. breve and B. longum) appear to bind to the intestinal mucosa and inhibit attachment of coliform bacteria.
Bifidobacteria, especially Bifidobacterium bifidum, are the predominant intestinal flora of breast-fed infants. The substances that bifidobacteria produce might contribute to the protection that breast-feeding provides against undesirable gastrointestinal bacteria in infants. However, after an early age the general ecology of the intestinal flora is established and it’s very difficult for new species, not originally present, to colonize this environment indefinitely. This goes for many strains of Bifidobacteria, which often disappear from the feces within 2 weeks after discontinuing supplementation. This suggests that intestinal colonization may be transient, so Bifidobacteria must be used regularly to achieve continued benefit.
Bifidobacterium breve
When used as an adjunct to treatment with medication, a combination of Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus was shown to help prevent relapse and reduce discomfort in patients with a sensitive/irritable bowel.
Bifidobacterium infantis
Within one week of use, Bifidobacterium infantis was shown to significantly reduce discomfort associated with an irritable bowel, including abdominal irritation, bloating, and sluggish bowel movement.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
When used as an adjunct to treatment with medication, a combination of Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus was shown to help reduce relapses and discomfort in patients with a sensitive bowell.
Bifidobacterium bifidum significantly enhanced phagocytosis of E. coli in human volunteers, demonstrating that this probiotic helps promote the proper balance of gastrointestinal bacteria while enhancing overall immunity. B. bifidum may also assist in the excretion of excess cholesterol from the intestines before it is absorbed by the body.
Bifidobacterium longum
Some research indicates that taking Bifidobacterium longum can reduce stool frequency, abdominal discomfort, and stool clostridial spore count in antibiotic-associated diarrhea; although other research did not find the same significant reduction in diarrhea. Also, B. longum may ease flatulence. B. longum BB536 has also been studied for its effects in modulating the immune system’s response to allergens.
Fructooligosaccharides
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are fiber-like polysaccharides that occur in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Fructooligosaccharides are “prebiotics” that promote the growth and activity of probiotic bacteria that produce acids, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, in the gut.
Supplementing and Refrigerating Bifidus Balance
Take Bifidus Balance 20-60 minutes after eating –– stomach acidity is buffered by your meal and survival of bifidobacteria through the intestinal tract will be sufficient to ensure their replication and implantation. Keep Bifidus Balance refrigerated! If you take Bifidus Balance with you on a trip, keep it out of the heat. The bacteria can survive for a reasonable amount of time out of the refrigerator; however, refrigeration will extend the viability of the product.
