Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
The skin is the largest organ of the human body, contributing 15- 20% of our body weight. Skin is composed of a large amount of connective tissues, such as collagen. One material often found closely associated with collagen is hyaluronic acid (HA). In skin, HA acts to assist in the retention of moisture. HA is a chain-like molecule, consisting of two different sugar units (glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine), that can range greatly in size—up to 50,000 units in length. Together with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, HA is a chief component of the extracellular matrix.
HA is also a major component of synovial fluid in joints and helps increase its viscosity. As a component of cartilage, along with collagen, HA is part of the coating that surrounds each cell. However, in some joint conditions, changes occur in HA that lead to degradation of cartilage. Like Jell-O® (which consists of gelatin), HA holds onto large amounts of water, helps support the resilience of cartilage and acts as part of the fluid matrix for joint lubrication and cell hydration.*
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
Alpha lipoic acid (aka ALA, lipoate, thioctic acid, dihydrolipoic acid) is an antioxidant and co-factor in glycolysis. Glycolysis is the initial process in most of the body’s pathways to breakdown glucose into useful forms of energy. Though critical to oxygen utilizing life, ALA is not a vitamin because it can be synthesized from essential fatty acids and the amino acid L-cysteine. However, no food is rich enough to serve as a good source. Chemically, ALA has two juxtaposed sulfur atoms. When oxidized, the two sulfurs bond together (disulfide form). When reduced to dihydrolipoic acid, each sulfur atom attaches to hydrogen (thiol form). ALA’s antioxidant chemistry is similar to glutathione, another sulfur-containing molecule and the most abundant antioxidant inside cells.
ALA The Universal Antioxidant
ALA is reduced to its active form, dihydrolipoic acid, inside cells as the body needs it and is able to do so. The enzyme responsible for this, dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (LipHD), preferentially reduces the R-enantiomer of lipoic acid; this is why the R form is often considered the only biologically relevant form. However this may not be entirely accurate. Like vitamin C, ALA functions in water-based phases such as blood. However, like vitamin E, it also protects fatty tissues and membranes. ALA quenches free radicals— like hydroxyl, singlet-oxygen, and peroxynitrite—in both water and lipid phases, and protects against lipid peroxidation. It deactivates an unusually wide array of cell-damaging free radicals in many bodily systems.
ALA Recycler Built for Two
ALA also enhances the potency of other antioxidants in both waterbased (blood, cytosol) and lipid (membrane, blood fat) compartments. It recycles vitamin C directly and vitamin E indirectly in a unique and significant capacity, often preventing the symptoms of deficiency of these two critical vitamins.*
Importantly, ALA increases glutathione levels in cells, in part by facilitating L-cysteine availability. It maintains the ratio of reduced-tooxidized coenzyme Q10, which impacts mitochondrial health and energy production.*
ALA Blood Sugar Metabolism and Muscular Energy
Perhaps the most significant function of ALA is its important role in energy production from carbohydrates, participating in the multi-enzyme process on many levels. ALA stimulates insulin activity, reduces insulin resistance, and enhances glucose burning in obese laboratory animals. Humans with diabetes show a ~50% increase in glucose consumption. This also has implications for athletes and the overweight. Muscle activity requires efficient sugar metabolism. Similar improvements in sugar disposal occurred in brain tissue.
Alpha-lipoic acid is currently being studied for many age-related conditions, including heart and vascular health, sugar balance, neurological function, immune function, as well as fatigue and muscle strength. There is much protective promise in this powerful, broadspectrum antioxidant.*
Glisodin®
Superoxyde Dismutase (SOD) is a well-known and extensively studied biologically active compound produced by most cells of the body. As we age, production of SOD diminishes. SOD is often referred to as the Powerhouse Antioxidant or Master Defense enzyme. It is critical to cellular health, protecting the cells from excessive oxygen radicals, free radicals and other noxious agents that cause premature aging or eventual cell death.
Oxygen is the most important element for life in the animal kingdom particularly for humans. During its utilization by the human body, oxygen gives birth to very reactive forms called “free radicals”. Free radicals are destroyed by the natural defense systems named “antioxidants”.
The body’s antioxidant mechanisms can be classified into 2 groups:
• Dietary antioxidants (exogenous): certain foods are rich in antioxidant substances like vitamins (Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin A or its precursor beta-carotene), minerals (Selenium, Zinc, Copper and Manganese) and other substances, including the polyphenols found in grapes and green tea.
• Enzymatic antioxidants made by the body (endogenous): the three main enzymes are Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase and Glutathi-one Peroxidase.
Among these enzymes, SOD intervenes in the first transformation by dismuting the most reactive forms (and therefore the most dangerous for the cells) of oxygen – the Super Oxide radicals – into ions that are less reactive, themselves destroyed by the two other enzymes. This transformation is called dismutation, thus its name Dismutase. If these defense mechanisms do not immediately eliminate the free radicals, the body’s cells suffer from an “oxidative stress” that can lead to or promote health problems.
Scientific studies carried out during the last decades have established that oxidative stress is implicated in numerous pathologies including respiratory problems, memory loss, cardio-vascular problems, vision problems and arthritis.
Acting as the body’s major antioxidant defense, Glisodin® is one of the most dynamic and versatile nutraceuticals. By increasing the body’s production of SOD, Glutathion-peroxidation and Catalase, it has the capability of stimulating the body’s defense against free radicals and positively influences the immune system. Through extensive research, Glisodin ® has been clinically tested in hospitals with positive results.
