How Does Each Active Ingredient Function in this Product?
Lactobacillus spp: Common inhabitants of the human body, this genus contains some of the most well-known probiotic organisms. Strains of lactobacilli have been found to support immunity and produce substances that help promote a healthy digestive tract.*
Bifidobacterium spp: A genus of organisms that colonize the gut shortly after birth and are integral in the healthy functioning of the adult digestive tract. Strains of bifidobacteria
are known to produce healthy short-chain fatty acids, modulate immune response and promote greater tolerance to dairy products.*

With growing knowledge of probiotic role in human health and well-being, there has been a rapid increase in public interest in probiotic products for healthy immune system, digestion, and gastrointestinal regularity. Jarrow Formulas® has been a leader in probiotic formulation and distribution since 1980’s. Although it may seem that Jarrow Formulas already has all the bases covered with regard to probiotic products, Jarrow Formulas’ most advanced technology now allows the company to produce its newest probiotic formula, Jarro-Dophilus® AF (Allergen Free), a certified allergenfree probiotics product. In addition to currently available Jarro- Dophilus general formulations and their specialty formulas, this product would meet the needs of individuals with hypersensitivities and food allergies.
Allergies
An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a substance called an antigen (aka, allergen) which is foreign to the body, but otherwise harmless (e.g., pollen from grasses and flowers, proteins from certain foods, etc.). In an allergic individual, there is an overproduction of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to various allergens which then initiates an allergic reaction by setting in motion inflammatory processes. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of American, allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic condition in America with an annual cost exceeding $18 billion. Allergic responses are believed to complicate and even handicap the lives of nearly 50 million children and adults. The symptoms, or allergic reactions, may include sneezing, watery eyes, nasal congestion, rash, stomach upset, itchy swellings on the skin (hives), and spasms within the lungs that interfere with breathing.
Sometimes a reaction to food is not an allergy. It is often a reaction called “food intolerance.” Food intolerance is a digestive system response rather than an immune system response. It occurs when something in a food irritates a person’s digestive system or when a person is unable to properly digest, or breakdown, the food. Intolerance to lactose, which is found in milk and other dairy products, is the most common food intolerance. However, these symptoms can look and feel like those of a food allergy. In any case, the most common allergens are found in milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat/gluten, soy, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.
Certified Allergen Free
To avoid unpleasant and potentially dangerous allergic reactions associated with the use of a probiotic supplement, Jarrow Formulas AF is comprised of certified allergen free probiotic strains. The term, certified allergen free, is a designation awarded to various food ingredients in Europe, where allergens in foodstuffs are regulated by Directive 2003/89/EC, with the aim “to achieve a high level of health protection for consumers and to guarantee the right to information.”
In the case of Jarrow Formulas AF, its probiotics have received the certified allergen free designation as a result of an innovative allergen free manufacturing process with an international patent filed with approval pending. This process guarantees safe consumption even to individuals with food allergies and/or food intolerances*. The process also improves stability of the freeze-dried probiotic at room temperature by protecting the physiological integrity of the bacterial cells.
In addition, use of the most sensitive analytical methods available and validated by Accredited International Institutions verify detection limits well below the critical allowed quantities and LOAEL (Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level) identified in DBPCFCs (Double- Blind Placebo-Controlled Food Challenges). The tests are based on complementary analytical strategies to guarantee the utmost reliability of the analytical findings concerning the presence of trace allergens. This includes protein analysis (ELISA, SDS-PAGE and IMMUNOBLOT) and DNA Analysis (PCR and PCR-ELISA).

Suggested Usage
Take 1 or 2 capsules per day, with water and a meal. For infants and children, open capsule and mix contents with water, or unheated liquids such as fruit juices, or foods. Or take as directed by your qualified health care consultant.

Other Ingredients
Rice maltodextrin, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), silicon dioxide, and ascorbic acid. Capsule consists of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose.
