AllerTame™

An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a substance called an antigen (aka allergen), a substance foreign to the body but otherwise harmless (e.g., pollen from grasses and flowers, etc.). In an allergic individual, there is an overproduction of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to various allergens which then initiates an allergic reaction by setting in motion inflammatory processes, including the activation of mast cells. The inflammation-inducing contents of mast cells (found in tissues) and basophils (mast cell counterparts found in blood), like histamines and leukotrienes, are the culprits responsible for causing allergic reactions and symptoms like swelling, redness and itching. Inflammation can also constrict airways, making it hard to breathe and increasing congestion. For this reason, it is essential to promote a healthy inflammatory response when it comes to dealing with allergies.*

Butterbur
Extracts of the herb Butterbur have shown clinical relevance in modulating allergic symptoms, particularly in people with allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and in beneficially affecting histamine and leukotrienes levels after only five days of use. One study compared the clinical efficacy of Butterbur extract with an established antihistamine drug (cetirizine) in a double-blind study to evaluate its effectiveness. The authors of the study published in the British Medical Journal concluded, “The effects of butterbur are similar to those of cetirizine in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis when evaluated blindly by patients and doctors. Butterbur should be considered for seasonal allergic rhinitis*

Bromelain
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple, stimulates the production and release of certain prostaglandins (PG), while simultaneously reducing the production and release of other PG, with the net result of promoting a healthy inflammatory response.* In animal research, bromelain has shown the ability to support a healthy inflammatory response. In other animal research bromelain has been shown to modulate IgE production, which may explain part of its benefits for allergies.*

Perilla Seed Oil
In both animal and laboratory research perilla oil helped modulate histamine release from mast cells. By this mechanism, perilla may help calm a hyper-responsive immune reaction by preferentially reducing IgE production. These benefits may be caused by three natural compounds found in perilla seed oil: alpha-linolenic acid, alpha lipoic acid, and rosemarinic acid.

Alpha-linolenic acid is a fatty acid precursor to the omega-3, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and helps to support a healthy inflammatory response and a positive effect on leukotriene activity. Alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant produced by the body and found in our food supply, can scavenge free radicals both intra- and extracellularly supporting a healthy inflammatory response. Rosemarinic acid (RA), found in both perilla and the herb rosemary (AllerTame provides RA from both sources), has demonstrated a number of effects in supporting a healthy inflammatory and allergic response.* In a 21- day placebo-controlled study that was summarized and published in 2004, patients with mild seasonal allergies were administered an  extract of perilla, enriched for RA, or a placebo daily. Those using the RA enriched perilla had a statistically significant decrease in itchy nose, watery eyes, itchy eyes, and total symptoms.*

Quercetin
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with histamine modulating properties. Flavonoids, like quercetin, possess voluminous amounts of evidence dealing with their modulatory action on mast cells and allergic symptoms.* Many believe quercetin to be the most effective of these flavonoids in this area. In one Japanese study of mast cells from the nose-lining of individuals with perennial hay fever, quercetin significantly attenuated histamine release.*
