Women’s Multi
The Comprehensive Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Formula for Women Jarrow Formulas ® Women’s Multi is a comprehensive formula for pre-menopausal women that incorporates the latest research on vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.
Most of us do not meet our basic needs for many nutrients on a daily basis. Even the current five-a-day guidelines for fruits and vegetables give no direction for what should be consumed. Indeed, the fruits and vegetables most consumed by Americans (iceberg lettuce, tomato products, French fries, bananas, orange juice, and onions) do not supply even the minimum recommendations for vitamin C and folic acid. These foods are usually not among those rich in antioxidants and free radical scavengers either. Moreover, minimum recommendations apply only to those already in good health.
Why Women Need Their Own Multiple
People differ greatly in their biochemical needs. Some individuals need five to ten times more of a given vitamin than do others. Unsurprisingly, women and men have different nutritional needs.
Two nutrients, zinc and iron, illustrate this difference. Zinc is thought of as a “male” mineral because of its role in prostate health. Women, on the other hand, lose iron regularly and may need to supplement with iron levels unhealthful for many men. Another example is calcium supplementation, which helps women avoid osteoporosis. Calcium is less important to men, for whom magnesium may play a larger role.*
Women of childbearing age also need more nutrients for fertility and pregnancy. Many congenital problems arise in the first few months of pregnancy, before the mother knows she is pregnant. Multivitamins have been shown to protect against such abnormalities. Multivitamin use is also more common in non-obese women, possibly because fewer obese people consider vitamins important for health.*
The Diet/Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) Connection
A woman’s adult pattern of nutritional needs begins at menstruation. During this time, roughly one third of women suffer from PMS, including anxiety and tension, mood swings, aches and pains, depression, cravings and fluid retention. Such symptoms derive from imbalances between estrogen and progesterone hormones, which impact aldosterone and fluid retention.
Studies of PMS sufferers have uncovered a number of significant differences in basic nutrient intake compared to those who do not. Women with PMS tend to eat more refined carbohydrates. Their diets are also generally poorer in minerals (calcium, iron, manganese and zinc). Estrogen excess in PMS could reflect intestinal reabsorption of discarded estrogen due to inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption.*
Women who consume more antioxidants, or supplement with powerful antioxidants like vitamin E and grape seed extract, seem to suffer less from PMS. Minerals found to be most influential upon PMS are calcium and magnesium. These nutrients may influence the liver’s ability to handle estrogen metabolites.*
Other Highlights
For Eyes: Bilberry and lutein are important phytonutrients for the eyes.* Lutein is a carotenoid that supports visual function and protects eye health as we age.* Lutein contributes to the density of macular pigment – the eye component that filters out damaging near-ultraviolet blue light striking the retina.*
Veins, Skin and Immunity: Bioflavonoids and grape seed extract help vitamin C reduce capillary permeability, to improve vein tonus and stabilize skin collagen.* These antioxidants are prized in Europe for preventing vitamin C oxidation, and functioning like vitamin C in protecting collagen and maintaining cell membranes. Grape seed extract and bioflavonoids help inhibit virus replication and protect eyes and nerves from oxidative stress.* Multivitamins and antioxidants have been shown to enhance many aspects of immunity.*
Hormonal Balance: In Indian medicine, Shatavari is especially well-suited to women. Classified as a yin tonic; it is said to improve blood, mucous membranes and reproductive organ health.*
Even More Antioxidant Protection: Pomegranate (Punica granatum) have long been recognized for its many health benefits. Pomegranate is one of the most powerful antioxidant fruits and gives this formula extra antioxidant “punch.”
